Lyr Claude (Claude Vanderhaeghe)

Claude Lyr (pseudonym of Claude Vanderhaeghe) was a Belgian artist who was born in 1916 in Pessac-lez-Bordeaux/France and who died in 1995 in Uccle. He was a painter, draftsman, watercolourist, graphic artist. Son of René Lyr. Education at the Academy in Brussels under J. Albert (1933-1938). Founded the engraving course at this academy in 1956. Traveled to Italy, the Belgian Congo (1955-1956) and the United States. Was a teacher at the Academy in Brussels from 1956 to 1962, became director at the art school in Ixelles and then at the Academy in Brussels (1978-1981). Poetry, symbolism and man play an important role in his works, which breathe mystery, dream and fantasy. In addition to his paintings, he also left behind an extensive oeuvre of drawings and etchings. From the press: ’At C.L. undeniably the idea, the search, the ever more approaching freedom, wisdom and knowledge remain primordial. The goal of C.L. continued to express and represent man in his manifold aspects' and 'Mindful of the clique mind, C.L. from the different streams of thought are a guideline that, through the material, brings Man to the Spirit.” From 1953 regularly exhibited in the Albert I gallery in Brussels and also took part in the exhibitions of the Fantasmagie Group, including in 1978. Work in the Print Room in Brussels, in the Museums in Ixelles, Charleroi, La Louvière, Mons, Ostend. Mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (piron)
