Chemay Jacques
CHEMAY, Jacques (Ghent, 1938–Malaucène/France, 1996). Painter, sculptor, printmaker. Trained at Ter Kameren in Brussels. Settled in Paris in 1960. His oeuvre appears abstract, fantastic, and hallucinatory. He paints, among other things, Baroque inner or organically appearing landscapes. From the press: ‘The viewer is forced to enter the painter’s inner world. His canvases are cut through by the earth, by the geological layer. His world of imagination is nourished by his love for the earth on which he lives. As such, he immerses us in his world where insects and fantastic creatures live alongside the brush. The deep, subterranean compositions are not obscure, however. On the contrary, bright colors illuminate the whole.’ Mentioned in BAS II and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (Piron)
