Canneel Jules-Marie

Jules-Marie Canneel was a Belgian artist, born in 1881 in Brussels and died in 1953 in Brussels. He was a painter, draftsman, watercolorist and caricaturist. He was the eldest brother of Eugène, Jean and Marcel Canneel. He was educated at the Academy in Brussels, under the supervision of Blanc-Garin and Montald (1900-1903). He realized figures, nudes, landscapes, cityscapes and still lifes. His impressionistic design is characterized by broad, colorful brushstrokes, which are sometimes reminiscent of Fauvism. He made numerous trips through Europe and to the North of Africa, where he also found inspiration. He also contributed as an author and draftsman to the magazine “Pourquoi Pas?”, drew numerous caricatures and illustrated works by, among others, Liger-Belair and M. Maeterlinck. Work by Jules-Marie Canneel can be found in the Museums in Ghent and Brussels, in the Prentenkabinet in Brussels, in the Royal Military Museum in Brussels, in the Folklore Museum in Antwerp and in the Museum in Grenoble/France. He is mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
