Callaert Jacques

Jacques Callaert was a Belgian artist, born in Ghent in 1921 and died in Ostend in 1995. He was a figurative painter and draftsman. He was educated at the Academy in Ghent. He was a student of Dierckens, Heylbroeck, Pauwels, De Cuyper and Cosyns. During World War II, he volunteered in the United States Army. After the war he went on to perfect himself in portraiture at the Académie Libre in Paris/France. In 1952 he settled in Middelkerke. From 1959 he spent some time in Congo. He made (Congolese) landscapes, portraits, characters, seascapes, Italian landscapes and Parisian corners. He worked in the spirit of Impressionism. Jacques Callaert had his own gallery in Middelkerke. In 1959 he exhibited in Elisabethstad and in 1960 in the Jordaens gallery in Ghent. His works have been purchased by the city of Aalst and the municipality of Middelkerke. He is mentioned in the Lexicon of West Flemish visual artists vi, BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
