Buytaert Jan

Jan F.E. Buytaert was a Belgian artist, born in Beveren-Waas in 1939 and died in Sint-Niklaas in 2011. He was a painter, draftsman, watercolorist, graphic artist, and restorer. He studied at Sint-Lucas in Ghent from 1956 to 1963, then at the Pietro Vannucci Academy in Perugia, Italy from 1965 to 1968, and in 1962 at the Schule des Sehens under O. Kokoschka in Salzburg, Austria. From the press: "Some artists are fascinated by the many manifestations of reality. They are like explorers and conquerors in the physical and psychological world that surrounds them. They seek the absolute imagination of what they discover, both in content and form. Recreating the multifaceted reality in paintings, etchings, and woodcuts. J.B. belongs to the contemplative among these artists." and "His work is an adequate expression of an inward-looking personality, full of unexpected originality and determination, full of emotion and poignancy. An ambivalent art that forces us to confront the double bottoms of things with our own inwardness." (H. Verloove) From 1980, he was the driving force behind the Schule des Sehens in Flanders. In 1980, a major retrospective exhibition from 1959-1979 was held in Sint-Niklaas. Jan Buytaert taught at the Academy of Sint-Niklaas from 1969 to 2001. He is listed in BAS II and "Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists" (Piron).
