Broniatowsky, Karol

Karol Broniatowski is a Polish artist, born in Łódź in 1945. He is a sculptor, draftsman, and installation artist. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, graduating in 1970. In 1971, he gained international recognition with his monumental papier-mâché figures exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford.

Broniatowski’s work often deals with themes such as memory, identity, and collective history. His sculptures and installations reflect a profound engagement with historical events, particularly Jewish history and the Holocaust. In 1995, he designed the Monument for the Deported Jews of Berlin, located at Grunewald Station in Berlin.

In addition to monumental works, he also created numerous drawings and smaller sculptures, often featuring expressive human silhouettes as a central motif. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout Europe and the United States. Karol Broniatowski lives and works in Berlin. (BT)
