Brias Charles
Charles Brias (Mechelen 1798 – Brussels 1884). Painter and engraver. Trained at the Academy in Mechelen (1817–1818). He furthered his studies in Paris and settled in Brussels in 1822. He fought against the Dutch 'occupier' in 1830 and was awarded the Iron Cross for this in 1833. His oeuvre includes portraits, genre scenes, and landscapes. His works demonstrate an eye for detail and are characterized by an extremely meticulous finish. He was awarded the Medal of the City of Brussels in 1841. A man of considerable means, he bequeathed his fortune upon his death to charitable institutions for the poor in Brussels and Mechelen. His work is held in collections including the museums of Brussels and Mechelen. (Piron)
