Boulez Jules

Jules Boulez was a Belgian painter, born in Sint-Eloois-Vijve in 1889 and died in Oudenaarde in 1960. He was a member of the Sketch Club in Waregem, where E. Claus improved his drawings. He studied French diction and scenic art at the Conservation in Ghent (1908-1910). He became acquainted with painting in the studio Charrier in Paris/France (1910-1912). He continued his education at the Academy in Ghent under J. Delvin and G. Minne (1912-1914). After his marriage in 1916 he settled in Oudenaarde. He made his debut with hazy impressionistic landscapes and then also painted large nudes and very colorful still lifes. Post-expressionist but dry and solidly constructed landscapes. He has personally incorporated most of the French art movements of the 20th century and also produced cubist and abstract work. From the press: “His paintings are mainly sonorous color chords and daring, juxtaposed contrasts. He is an improviser, a lyricist, also a man of culture, an aristocrat of the mind. He successively stood with both feet in impressionism, surrealism and abstract art.” (G. Van Severen, 1953) He also painted fascinating pictures of horses. Jules Boulez is listed in the Lexicon of West Flemish visual artists i, BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
