Bernier Charles

Charles Bernier was a Belgian artist, born in Angre in 1871 and died in Angre in 1950. He was an engraver. He studied at the Academy in Mons under the guidance of Bourlard and Danse (1890-1891) and furthered his studies in Paris (1892-1893). In 1891, he achieved second place in the Prix de Rome for engraving. Bernier often worked from paintings by old masters and contemporaries but also produced personal works, including portraits. He was influenced by Impressionism. Sometimes, he signed his work as Charles Dubailly because he was the owner of the Cour du Bailly in Mons. He is listed in BAS I and "Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists" (Piron).
