Bellmer Hans

Hans Bellmer (Katowice, 1902 – Paris, 1975) was a French artist—originally from Germany—who worked as a photographer, sculptor, printmaker, painter, and author. As a proponent of magical realism, he influenced artists such as Paul Wunderlich and Horst Janssen. Growing up in a difficult family environment, Bellmer developed an early interest in politics, Dada, and art. After a brief period of studying engineering in Berlin, he chose to pursue an artistic career in 1925. He worked as a printmaker and came into contact with Dadaists and surrealists in Paris.

From the 1930s onward, Bellmer focused on erotic and surreal depictions of the female body. In 1933, he created his well-known dolls, assembled from materials including wood, metal, and parts of store mannequins. Photographs of these works brought him international renown, notably through the magazine Minotaure and exhibitions in New York.

In 1938, Bellmer moved to Paris, where he continued to develop his work centered on the doll. For a long period, he collaborated with the writer Unica Zürn. His work is classified as surrealist and influenced artists such as Paul Wunderlich and Horst Janssen. Bellmer passed away in 1975 and was buried at the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
