This armchair is clearly executed in the Louis XV style, also known as the French Rococo style. The style originated around 1725–1770.

The typical features are the softly undulating, asymmetrical lines, the gracefully curved cabriole legs, the curling armrests, and the small carved rocaille and shell motifs on the front rail and on the back. The round, high back and the richly upholstered seat reinforce the elegant, decorative character.

In contrast to earlier Louis XVI furniture, this armchair is much less rigid and symmetrical: it belongs to the more playful, organic design language of the Rococo.
