This powerful painting belongs to a series of works that Armand Jamar created in 1939 under the collective title Le Purgatoire, a direct reference to Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. The title written on the canvas, “Chapitre VII – Vous sentiez...”, adds a narrative, almost theatrical depth to the scene. In dynamic brushstrokes and earthy tones, Jamar evokes the grandeur of the sea, rocks and sky as symbols of inner journey and purification. Human figures appear to wander at the edge of a turbulent world, possibly caught between guilt and grace. The work is both literary and spiritual, painted with a striking sense of urgency and emotion.
