Belgeonne Gabriel

Gabriel Belgeonne (pseudonym of Busine, Gabriel) is a Belgian artist born in Gerpinnes in 1935. He is a graphic artist, painter, designer of stained glass and tapestries. He studied at the Academy in Mons from 1955 to 1962. As the nephew of Zéphir Busine, he was introduced to the visual arts by his uncle, who pulled him out of the routine of his academy years. Initially, he wanted to be a painter, but after meeting Gustave Marchoul, everything changed and he devoted himself entirely to the art of etching. From the press: "The hallmark and metamorphosis of forms guide this great engraving art" and "The art of G.B., a struggle between void and matter, is simultaneously that of the painter, the engraver, and the architect. In sober, restrained tonalities, primitive forms emerge, resisting the soft blacks and subtle grays that rhythm the composition. Recently, he rediscovered painting, which he had long abandoned, and now works in lyrical abstraction defined by color and overlapping layers of paint." (1996). Gabriel Belgeonne has been a teacher at the Academy in Mons since 1962, director of ESAPVE in Mons in 1976-1977, a teacher from 1990 and director from 1998 to 2000 at La Cambre in Brussels. He was also tirelessly active in publishing and organizing graphic events. He was a member of the Cap d’Encre group (1965-1970), and founder of the Tandem Group (1970). He is listed in BAS I, BAS II, and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (Piron)
