Batenburg Jean

Jean Batenburg was a Belgian artist, born in Anderlecht in 1906 and died in Grimbergen in 1990. He was a figurative painter, etcher and watercolorist. He trained at the academies in Brussels and Schaarbeek. In Brussels he trained as an interior architect. In 1974 he settled permanently in Grimbergen. He was an active member of the Vilvoorde Portaelskring. He was also a member of the 'Cercle Artistique de Schaarbeek' and of the 'Cercle des Aquaforistes de Belgique'. In terms of colour, style and technique in his graphic work, he leaned towards the work of Jules Debruycker. He mainly created landscapes, city and village views and figures. He exhibited, among others, in the Errera hall in Brussels (1941), in 1942 and 1944 in Charleroi, annually with the Portaelskring in Vilvoorde and in the Cultural Center in Brussels. Professionally, he designed furniture and, together with his wife, ran a design shop with furniture in Kortenberg.
