Newcomb Barbara

Barbara Newcomb was born in Arlington, Virginia in 1936 and passed away in 2020. She was educated in the US. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with Distinction from Syracuse University in New York, Barbara came to the United Kingdom. She immediately fell in love with England and called it the most beautiful country in the world. From then on and despite her travels to Europe and the Far East, her landscape work focused on capturing the uniqueness of the English countryside. Although trained as a painter and illustrator, once she discovered the versatility and flexibility of the etching, she began working exclusively as a printmaker in this medium. After training at the Central School (later Central St. Martin's) in London under Tony Harrison, Barbara went to work with the most famous printmaker of the 20th century, Bill Hayter at his Paris studio, the celebrated Atelier 17. Barbara conducted always do the drawing and each stage of the etching of the plates yourself. Great care had to be taken in the printing process to mix the many colors and apply just the right amount of ink to each plate. Barbara always worked with her husband to make each print individually. Each print has its own edition number and is signed by the artist. In 1989 Barbara started making monoprints (single prints instead of editions). The subjects were mainly seascapes, flowers and landscapes of which only a few remain. However, Barbara is always looking for the subjects that reflect her deep commitment to the energy we find in all of life: the movement of the clouds and the sea and the grass, the rhythm and grace of Fred Astaire's dance and the dedication and enthusiasm of the athlete and the athlete.
