Backvis Frans
Frans Backvis was a Belgian painter, born in Brussels in 1857 and died there in 1926. He painted rural scenes and compositions with animals, particularly sheep. Between 1874 and 1886 he exhibited in Ghent. During that period, he lived in Brussels, including in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek. He took part in the General Exhibition of Fine Arts in Brussels in 1875 (Sheepfold) and in 1884 (Attack and Resistance), as well as in the Exposition historique de l’Art belge 1830-1880 in Brussels in 1880 with Flock of Sheep Attacked by Wolves. His work can be found in the museum of Kortrijk. He is mentioned in BAS II and in Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (Piron)
