Aurel (Aurèle) De Loof was a Belgian painter and draftsman born in Ghent in 1901 and died in Sint-Amandsberg in 1982. He suffered from a hearing and speech impediment. He was educated at the academy in Ghent under the direction of Tremerie, De Boever and Coddron. He won the Pipijn Prize for painting in 1928 and the great prize of the Academy for drawing from a live model in 1930. He painted figures, nudes, portraits, city and river views, and landscapes. He designed posters and advertising panels for, among others, the Meiresonne brewery. He stayed in Congo from 1954 to 1955 with a travel grant. He participated in the Salons in Ghent and also exhibited in the Pan Zaal in Ghent in 1958 and 1960. At that time he mainly showed landscapes and characters inspired by his stay in Congo. He is mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (piron)
