Belgische kunstenaar en geneesheer Auguste Chevalier

Chevalier Auguste

Auguste Chevalier was a Belgian artist, born in Thieu in 1929. He was a painter, draughtsman, photographer and author. Professionally, he was a physician. He interwove surrealism and symbolism in his imaginary landscapes. He was self-taught. From the press: "The paintings of A.C. evoke a strange, compelling world in which a rare balance is achieved between mind, emotion and imagination" and "For A.C., there remains a constant need to create grand settings, settings akin to the architecture of buildings and churches on Italian squares, but also to parts of plants and crops that have developed on a gigantic scale, or to strange forests and fiercely blazing fires." In his later work, the female figure, rendered with refined linework, came to the fore as a chosen theme. He exhibited at the Isy Brachot Fils gallery in Brussels in 1961. He is listed in Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (Piron)
