Achenbach Andreas

Andreas Achenbach was a German landscape painter who was born in 1815 in Kassel and who died in 1910 in Düsseldorf. He studied in Düsseldorf at the art academy under Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow. In the period 1832-1833 he made a journey through the Netherlands, where he was influenced by Jacob van Ruisdael and mainly painted on the Dutch coast. He also worked in Ostend. After 1835 he stayed in Munich and Frankfurt. In his early period he mainly followed the pseudo-idealism of the German romantic school, but in the period after 1835 he was influenced by Louis Gurlitt and Achenbach became the founder of the German realist school. Achenbach mainly painted landscapes and marines (such as Storm at Sea from 1836 (Munich, Neue Pinakothek). He was a master of technology and is historically important as a reformer. Some of his most important works can be found in Berlin, Munich (Neue Pinakothek), Dresden, Darmstadt, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Leipzig and Hamburg.(Wikipedia)
