Claes-Thobois Albert
Albert Claes-Thobois (Claes-Florian) was a Belgian artist born in Ixelles in 1883 and died in Schaerbeek in 1945. He was a painter, draftsman, watercolorist and wood engraver. He was educated at the Academy in Brussels under the supervision of C. Montald and H. Richier (1896-1897 and 1901-1903). He realized landscapes, city and park views, figures, still lifes and flowers. He made his debut impressionistically, but from about 1920 his design became more synthesized. He also had a cubist period and was influenced by Russian modernism. A.C. illustrated poems by A. Verhaeren (Les heures d'après-midi, 1923). He exhibited in several galleries, including the gallery Le Centaure in Brussels in 1922, with L'Esthétique Nouvelle in Brussels in 1921 and the Cercle Litéraire de Bruxelles in 1925. The work Ambiorixplein with fountain (1923) is included in the collection of the Museum in Brussels. Several of his works were auctioned by the G. Giroux gallery in Brussels in 1947 and 1949. He is mentioned in Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (piron)
