Van Praet Remi
Remi Van Praet was a Belgian artist born in Diegem-Lo in 1937 and who died in 2007 in Machelen/Brabant. He was a painter, draftsman, etcher, woodcarver and sculptor. Education at the Portaelsschool in Vilvoorde. Exceptional colourist who knows how to create an almost elusive atmosphere in his works in which both figuration and abstraction unfold voluptuously. His works exude a strong inner charge. From the press: 'Until 1985, R.V.P. best known as a lino and wood carver. Partly due to the advice of Geo Sempels, who taught him, among other things, the standards of the golden ratio, he evolved from rural figuration to an abstract design in calculated structures.' (P.D.G.), and 'Remi's canvases have something special that matches both the atmosphere as it relates to color, something that is partially hidden under the skin of things, a faded poetry that has disappeared into modules that live in harmony with each other.' The artist: 'My art has become much more abstract in recent years. Only in my sculptures do you sometimes see distorted female figures appearing. Some people see something African in my art. But I am also an admirer of Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock.' (2007) Worked as a sculptor, preferably in wood. Worked in Machelen/Brabant. Mentioned in Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists.” (Piron)
