Celie Pieter
Pieter Celie (pseudonym of Theo Van De Bult) was a Dutch artist, born in Eindhoven in 1942 and died in Borgerhout (Belgium) in 2015. He was a visual artist, sculptor, and assemblage artist. He studied at the Academy for Industrial Design in Eindhoven and at the Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp.
Celie was active in Antwerp and was initially influenced by op-art. His work includes both two- and three-dimensional creations. In 1976, he co-founded the group M.G. (Miskende Genieën – Unrecognized Geniuses) together with F. Maieu, W. Sweetlove, and P. Van Rafelghem. After a trip to the United States in 1988, he began incorporating collages and painted photographs into his work.
His sculptures – often composed of planks or cut-out objects and figures (such as a wooden dog with a beer) – are original and playful. In 1997, he created a series of birds in glued and polished light wood.
From the press: "P.C.'s attention to the creation of objects is limitless, also in terms of scale. Everything he touches gains a new spiritual and artistic dimension. His work may come across as either playful or serious, but in the artistic world, P.C. is undoubtedly a unique figure." (Piron)
