Masui Paul-Auguste

Paul-Auguste Masui-Castrique was a Luxembourgish-Belgian artist who was born in Differdange in 1888 and who died in 1981 in Uccle. He was a Luxembourg-Belgian painter, pastelist, watercolorist and graphic artist. Realized landscapes, city and village views, figures, including workers. Debuted as a graphic artist with etchings, woodcuts and lithographs. was an officer in the grenadiers from 1909 to 1919, was wounded during the First World War and stayed in London from 1915 to 1919 for convalescence. In 1917 he published 'De Legende van Tijl Uilenspiegel', illustrated with 55 woodcuts. A large number of lithographs were produced in 1919 and 1920, mainly studies of construction workers, views of shipyards and streets. Between 1918 and 1922 he mainly practiced the pastel technique in order to become proficient in working with colours. In 1922 he also came out with his first oil paintings. Luministic color palette. Was successively influenced by Symbolism, Expressionism and Realism. The design appears structured, refined and slightly synthesized. Broad brushstroke, contrasting color palette. Settled in 1928 in his studio in Crabbegat/Uccle and would only leave it for annual summer stays in Provence from 1946 to 1976. From 1913 he was a member of the Société Royale des Aquafortistes Belges. In 1935, he was responsible for the decoration of the Brabant pavilion at the World Exhibition in Brussels. Work in the Print Room in Brussels and in the Museums in Brussels, Ixelles, Mons, Tournai, Verviers, Quimper, Carnavalet in Paris. His artistic activity ceased in December 1978.
