Belgische kunstenaar Joseph Coomans

Coomans Joseph

Joseph Coomans was a Belgian artist born in 1816 and died in 1889. He was a painter, draftsman and wood engraver. He was a student of N. De Keyser, G. Wappers and P. Van Hanselaere. He had a preference for, among other things, historical compositions and domestic scenes. He evolved from historic romanticism to classicism. Often worked in large format, with the figures more than life-sized. He followed the French army to Algeria (1843-1845), visited Greece and stayed in Naples (1856-1860). Then settled in Paris, where he regularly exhibited. (PIRON)
