Yoors Eugeen

Eugeen Yoors was a Belgian artist, born in Antwerp in 1879 and died in Berchem/Antwerp in 1975. He was a painter, draftsman, graphic artist, glazier and glass painter. He spent his childhood in Seville/Spain. At the age of twenty he came to study at the Academy in Antwerp and then followed further training at the Higher Institute in Antwerp and Paris. He undertook study trips to Italy, England, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland, before settling in Paris. In Paris he co-founded the magazine Les Entretiens Idéalistes and made many compositions after nude models. In 1907 he settled in Antwerp and became a member of Streven. In 1918 he married the Antwerp poet Magda Peeters (1892-1989). Among other things, he realized religious and symbolist compositions. He used a highly stylized design. He then devoted his heart and soul to religious art and the stained glass window. His biggest assignment was the realization of the stained glass frescoes for the Chapel of the Sisters Annonciaten in Heverlee (450 square meters). From the press: "It is a wonderful flash of colors and rays such as none has been created since the distant Middle Ages." (H. Coleye, 1932.0). He often collaborated with architects, including his friend Van Reeth. He also took part in the Pilgrims Exhibition in Antwerp in 1927 and 1930. Eugeen Yoors is mentioned in CRICK, BAS I and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (piron)
