Devarennes Charly
Charly Devarennes was a French artist. He was a painter who was born in 1928 in Chaumont in the Haute-Marne in the Champagne region in north-eastern France. He died in 2010. He started working in the family business of painting and decorating. He moved to Collioure in 1968 to devote more time to his art, although he continued to work as a decorator and also maintained a vineyard, which earned him the title of 'peintre paysan'. Charly's life was tumultuous. He felt alone in his love of art and his disdain for material things. His second marriage, after moving to Collioure, ended in heartbreak and divorce. He drank heavily and suffered from depression. He had long considered suicide before finally jumping off the cliffs at Collioure on 30 August 2010.
