Odehnal Antonín

Antonín Odehnal is a Czech artist who was born in 1931 in Skalici near Svitavou (Czech Republic). He was a draftsman and graphic artist. He was educated at the graphic arts department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. In 1964 Odehnal created his cycle Kameníci (Stonecutters) as etching and drypointing, the two techniques that predominate in his works and in which he has achieved important results. In the cycle, he wanted to express hard working conditions through specific visual arts, i. e. simplified shapes in a contrast of dark dark and light areas. In his ex-libris and New Year's cards, Odehnal uses more advanced graphic techniques, including copper engraving, wood engraving and mezzotint. The recurring subjects of his several dozen ex-libris are sportsmen, natural still lifes and female nudes in miniature executed with old master perfection. (Marcela Macharáčková)
