Remarks: Due to its dimensions alone, this etching is impressive and exceptional. After all, in Smits' graphic work the intimate atmosphere predominates, which is mainly evoked in smaller etchings. There are only a few etchings in the oeuvre that approach this size. The design of this print is also ambitious in terms of content. Earlier we called it a synthesis because it groups together different themes. Village life, mother and child, children playing, people walking, the ox cart, the white cloudy sky, the meager farms: all these subjects, which are discussed separately in other etchings, are harmoniously brought together here. The loose and spontaneous drawing style is very typical of Smits' way of working. (JS Museum)
