Thomas John Coates

Thomas John Coates is a contemporary British painter, born in Birmingham/United Kingdom in 1941. He was educated at the Art Schools in Bournville/United Kingdom (1956-1959) and Birmingham/United Kingdom (1959-1961). In 1961 he won a scholarship to the Royal Academic Schools under the supervision of Henry Rushbury and Peter Greenham, among others. He makes landscapes, street scenes, city buildings, portraits and figures. He traveled extensively, including to Australia, North Africa, Europe and America. He takes a distinct, spontaneous approach to the subject in his works, whether portrait or landscape, in oil, pastel or watercolor; he captures a moment in time with great passion. John Coates is the president of the New English Art Club and was president of the Royal Society of British Artists, and a member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolors. He has won several awards, including the 1987 Painter Stainers Prize and the New English Art Club (NEAC) Critics Prize. (BT)
