Gorus Stephan

Stephan Gorus was a Belgian artist who was born in 1913 in Dendermonde and died there in 2012. He was a painter. Pupil of his father Pieter Gorus and further training in drawing and painting at the Academy in Dendermonde under the direction of F. Willaert, Pr. Lenssens, J. Maes, F. Gogo and his father. Brother of Albert and Ernest Gorus. His academic training resulted in quite classic nudes, portraits and still lifes. Then accompanied his father on painting trips in nature. In this first period, his work thematically and technically followed the footsteps of his father. Until about 1946, mainly landscapes in neo-impressionist style were thus created. After the Second World War, he evolved in a more expressionistic direction. Life in the countryside and in the city was portrayed in an expressive, sober and abstract way in a study of light and color and with powerful rhythmic brushwork. Evolved in a more abstract direction towards the end of the 1950's. In the mid-1960s, a design emerged in which the expressive and the abstract were processed into its own, lived-in new figuration. Starting from his inner feelings and social compassion, in often intense colors and firm brushstrokes, he expressed his horror of war, hunger and the degradation of our society. Nevertheless, in the meantime he never remained insensitive to the universal beauty of man and nature, which he managed to portray gently in nudes and landscapes and in themes such as the child and motherhood. Music was also one of his sources of inspiration. Was co-founder and from 1957 to 1960 chairman of the avant-garde group Celbeton in Dendermonde. Retrospective in the town hall in Dendermonde in 1998, on the occasion of his 85th birthday. Mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. Source: Piron
