Schuermans Gaston

Gaston Schuermans was a Belgian artist, born in Antwerp in 1891 and died in Antwerp in 1962. He was a painter, watercolorist, draftsman, and illustrator. He was the son of the sculptor Karel Schuermans. As a soldier on the Yser front during World War I, he participated in the exhibition of De Belgische Standaard in De Panne in 1918. Afterwards, he primarily created landscapes with expansive skies. As a draftsman, he designed comic characters and caricatural figures. In 1958, he exhibited with the Antwerp Watercolorists at the Portenart Gallery in Brussels, in 1959 at the Matsys Gallery in Antwerp, and in 1962 at the Breckpot Gallery in Antwerp. He illustrated "Antwerpse Typen" (Jan Deschuyter, L. Opdebeeck Publishing, Antwerp, 1942). Gaston Schuermans is listed in "Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists" (Piron).
