Rosseeuw Karel

Karel (Charles) Rosseeuw was a Belgian artist, born in Molenbeek in 1891 and died in Molenbeek in 1982. He was a painter and graphic artist. At the age of 11 he followed a three-year course at the Academy in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek under the guidance of P. Abattucci and H. Ottevaere. From 1905 to 1912 he was an engraving student at A. Danse. At the same time he also attended night school at the Academy in Brussels under the direction of E. Fabry and G. Van Strydonck. In 1908 he submitted an etching for the first time to participate in the Salon de l'Estampe. From 1912 he started painting. During the First World War, he rented a studio in Brussels with some friends, which then grew into a kind of free studio, but went bankrupt. He could only really start his career in earnest in 1920. He then made a series of etchings, figures and landscapes. He fell under the spell of religious subjects through Servaes, and later Rembrandt. In 1921 he took part in the Salon of Religious Art in Antwerp with eight works. From the press: 'From his first etchings, we were struck by the soulful, melancholic note, which vibrated and warmed this whole work like a mysterious light.' (Crick) He published the etching folders Roman art, Golgotha and Flemish towers. Later, Bruges city and Flemish village views, landscapes, farm and mill views, figures were also created. He painted in a powerful, smoothly synthesized design. Karel Rosseeuw is mentioned in CRICK, BAS I and Two centuries signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
