Janssens René

René Janssens was a Belgian artist born in Brussels in 1870 and died in Ixelles in 1936. He was a painter, draftsman, watercolorist, graphic artist. Education at the Academy in Brussels, directed by J. Portaels (1885-1892), qualified in Paris, by Victor Galland. Realized landscapes, figures, interiors. Realistic design with a special sense of diffuse and subdued light. Smooth invoices and vague contours create intimism. Initially his compositions seemed rather idealizing. His works reflect silence and a certain melancholy. Founding member of Le Sillon in 1893. The René Janssens Prize was awarded in turn for the entire oeuvre of a Belgian painter, "author of the most remarkable works concerning the portrait or interiors". Work among others in the Museums in Antwerp, Brussels and Ixelles. Listed in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures by Belgian artists. (PIRON)
