Mechelaere Leo

Leo Mechelaere was a Belgian artist who was born in Bruges in 1880 and who died in Erlangen/Germany in 1964. He was a painter and etcher. Became deaf and mute at a young age. Education at the Academy in Bruges under Ed. Van Hove and at the Higher Institute in Antwerp, conducted by F. Courtens and J. De Vriendt. Realized, among other things, Bruges cityscapes, interiors, portraits, landscapes. Built up his works firmly and loved light and color. Later in life, he was forced by illness to take up residence with his eldest daughter in Erlangen. Work in the Groeninge Museum in Bruges, among others.
