Juliens Antoine

Antoine Juliens (born Jean-Louis Richard) is a Belgian artist, born in Virton in 1950. He is an actor (comedian), director, teacher and painter. He followed his art education - painting - at the St. Lucas in Brussels. Furthermore, he trained as an actor in Saint-Gilles/Brussels at the IAD (Institut des Arts de Diffusion) and at the CET (Centre d'Etudes Théâtrales) in Louvain-la-Neuve. His training under the guidance of the actor Orazio Costa and the meeting with Pierre Laroche were decisive for his vision of directing plays. In 1991, together with the comedienne Isabelle Maudet, he founded the company TEATR'OPERA. There he could develop his vision on the design of theater scenes, in which different disciplines come together: plastic arts, dance, music and architecture. In the latter it is important to him to make use of the local heritage as a scene, both spatially and temporally. For example, on the occasion of the 950th anniversary of Orval Abbey in 2021, Antoine Juliens developed and directed 'L'Or du Val'. This was a theatrical oratorio, in which he could fully utilize and exhibit his abilities as a versatile artist and director. Parallel to this oratorio, he held the exhibition 'L'Or du Val' in the museum of the Abbey of Orval. Paintings and studies on the visual creation of his oratorio were on display. In 2019 he received the Godefroid Prize from the Province of Luxembourg for his oeuvre. Antoine Juliens continued to paint throughout his career, but now that acting has moved to the background, he can fully focus on his personal expression on canvas and paper. His style is late-impressionist, pro-cubist and feels very modern due to his personal interpretations. He uses acrylic paint as a medium, often with a pasty touch. His works of art are always built around a specific theme, the artist makes a cycle of it, as it were. This keeps the viewer fascinated and is taken into the visual story told by the artist. The exhibition 'Rhapsodie Picturale' in the Provincial Palace of Arlon in 2021 is a good example of this. In this exhibition 80 works were shown based on the Gaume region and the Ardennes. Today, Antoine Juliens lives and works in Paris/France, but he regularly returns to his native region for inspiration. (BT)
