Fonteyne Jules

Jules Fonteyne was a Belgian artist born and died in Bruges (1878-1964). He was a painter, draftsman, graphic artist and illustrator. He was the son of the sculptor Hippolyte Fonteyne. He followed various courses at the Academy in Bruges under the supervision of H. Pickery (sculpture), Oscar De Breuck (art application) and Edmond Van Hove (drawing and painting), and then went on to the Academy in Brussels and the Higher Institute in Antwerp. further study under Is. sum up. He became a teacher in 1921 and director of the Bruges Academy in 1927. He mainly realized Bruges cityscapes and figures, portraits. His graphic oeuvre breathes the atmosphere of De Bruycker and often depicts scenes from Bruges in which he shows his social commitment. He also designed stained glass windows, posters, church furniture, ex-libris and postcards. He exhibited at the 'Exposition d'aquarelles, de pastels et d'eaux-fortes' in Antwerp in 1906. Retrospective exhibition of his work in the Groeninge Museum in Bruges in 1973.
