De Grave Jean-Jacques

Jean-Jacques De Grave was a Belgian artist who was born in 1923 in Veurne and who died in 2002 in Oostduinkerke. He was a graphic artist and wood engraver. Training at Sint-Lucas in Ghent under Brother Alfred and Gerard Hermans, at La Cambre in Brussels. Teachers such as J. Minne, o. Jespers and J. Cantré had a great influence on his work. Stayed in contact with Cobra until 1952. Designer of individual prints, series of prints, illustrator of numerous books. Co-founder of the Groepen Idee and Grafis 50. From the press: “Essential in all black-and-white prints are the contrast, the lapidary expression, the immediate recognisability, the slightly archaic representation and the sharp rhythm”.
