Leenknegt Jan

Jan Leenknegt is a Belgian artist, born in Oudenaarde in 1950. He is a graphic artist, draftsman, painter and designer of glass sculptures and stained glass windows. He is the son of Michiel Leenknegt. He was educated at the Academies in Antwerp and Mechelen. He perfected himself during his study trips to India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkey and Greece. In 1974 took over his father's studio. In the same year he became a plastic arts teacher and later a teacher at the Academy in Oudenaarde. He evolved from etcher, painter and glazier to builder of glass sculptures. He creates, among other things, two-dimensional stained glass windows in bright, fresh colors and three-dimensional work in transparent mouth-blown glass, encased in iron forgings. From the press about his painting: 'J.L. has an eye especially for the human figure and for the portrayal of a natural, vitalistic and playful world.' His glass sculptures evolve towards a more abstract design. In collaboration with Roger Raveel, he designed a stained-glass window for the chapel in Machelen aan de Leie. He is listed in Artists and Galleries 1998, BAS I and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists; (piron)
