Verboeckhoven Eugène

Eugène Verboeckhoven was a Belgian artist born in Waasten in 1798 and died in Schaerbeek in 1881. He was a painter, draftsman, engraver and initially also a sculptor. He was one of the first in Belgium to experiment with the lithographic technique. He was a student of his father Barthélemy, was educated at the Academy in Ghent around 1815 and was a student of A. Voituron in Ghent (1816). He made his debut in 1820 at the Salon in Ghent. He traveled to France, England, Germany and Italy. He settled in Brussels in 1827. He had a preference for romantic scenes with cattle, small cattle and stable scenes, sporadically he realized landscapes and portraits. Internationally, he belongs to the top of the romantic animal painters. He was active in the Belgian Revolution in 1830 and was appointed director of the Brussels Museums under the Provisional Government. He was mayor of Schaerbeek from 1861 to 1867. His work can be found in the museums in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Liège, Leuven and Kortrijk. He is listed in the Lexicon of West Flemish visual artists I, BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (piron)
