Belgische kunstenaar en schilder Albert Ernest

Albert Ernest

Ernest Albert is a Belgian artist who was born in 1900 in Berchem/Antwerp and who died in 1976 in Kalmthout. He was a painter, draftsman, watercolorist and gouachist. Education at the Academy in Antwerp under Van Der Veken (1912-1918), at the Higher Institute in Antwerp under F. Courtens (1918-1922). Realized portraits, nudes, still lifes, landscapes, marines, cityscapes. After making a series of Scheldt views, under the influence of F. Hens, he shows a greater sense of impressionistic colour analysis around 1927; then he builds constructions with coloured areas. In the 1930s he was temporarily influenced by Permeke's heavy colours. From 1932, broad compositions were created in sturdy construction and bright colours. Co-founder of the Circle of Modern Art, with which he regularly exhibited (1927-1935). Was a member of the Circle Als Ik Kan (1946-1957). Discovered the village of Ponsas in the south of France in 1938 and from that moment his palette brightened up completely. He found effortless inspiration in and around the village and was fascinated by the rhythmically rolling landscape. From 1946, he was a teacher at the Academy in Antwerp and from 1949 to 1965, director at the Academy in Mechelen. Work in the Museum in Antwerp, among others. Mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
