Delsa Edmond

Edmond Delsa was a Belgian artist, born and died in Liège (1875-1957). He was a painter, etcher, illustrator, poster designer and decorator. He was educated at the Academy in Liège under the direction of A. De Witte (1887-1894) and was a pupil of Cormon in Paris. He worked, among other things, as a designer for Val-Saint-Lambert and in 1890 he also became an apprentice to the printer Bénard in Liège. In 1896 he worked in Gérôme's studio in Paris. He painted figures, nudes, portraits, landscapes and genre scenes. At the Exhibition in Liège in 1930, he realized the murals for the Palace of the City of Liège, and in 1935 he painted the Diorama of the City of Liège for the Exhibition in Brussels. He also illustrated several works with woodcuts, etchings and drawings. From 1911 he was a teacher at the Normal School in Liège. He was founder and director of the Circle L'Envol (1920-1925). In 1930 he opened a trade in old paintings in Brussels and he was co-founder of La gravure originale belge. In 1937 he traveled to Italy. From 1894 to 1942 he exhibited with the Cercle des Beaux-Arts de Liège. His work can be found in the Musée de l'Art Wallon in Liège, among other places. He is mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (piron)
