Coppens Omer

Omer Coppens was a Franco-Belgian artist, born in Dunkirk/France in 1864 and died in Ixelles in 1926. He was a painter, etcher, graphic artist, watercolorist, designer of posters and decorative objects. He followed his education at the Academy in Ghent, under the supervision of Th. Cannel (1883-1884). He settled in Schaerbeek in 1884. He continued his education in Sint-Joost-ten-Node, the workshop of J. Capeinick in Schaarbeek and in the Vrije Academie Patte de Dindon. He realized landscapes, sea and harbor views, seascapes and especially (Bruges) cityscapes. From 1891 to 1892 he lived in Knokke. His friendship with Th. Van Rysselberghe influenced his treatment of light, color and matter. His countless nocturnal and Bruges faces transcend visual study and sometimes lead to ghostly and hazy atmospheres in which the human presence is reduced to a fleeting silhouette. He became fascinated with depicting fleeting moments of subdued light that we find in the dawn or dusk. His contacts with the symbolist circles around 1895-1896 led to a deep suggestive atmosphere in his works. His landscapes become, as it were, invitations to dream and meditation. Around 1900 he worked as a ceramist, in the style of Finch, and as a designer of book bindings, tapestries and objects in tin. After the First World War, he moved towards Late Impressionism and continued his quest to capture the light in the South of France and the Maghreb countries. He was a member of the L'Essor Group, co-founder and secretary of the Pour l'Art Group (1894-1904), co-founder of the Société Anonyme L'Art (association for the promotion of the applied arts), collaborator of the art magazine La Gerbe , director of the Société des Aquafortistes de Belgique, working member of the non-profit organization La Retraite des Artistes and the Cercle Artistique et Literaire. We can find work by Omer Coppens in the museum in Bruges, among other places. Bibliography: Kunsttijdschrift A.A.A., number 322, June 2001. He is mentioned in BAS I, II and Two centuries signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
