Anthony Beek, a Dutch painter was born in 1882 in Edam. He died in 1954. He was a member of the 'Kunstvereeniging Gerard Dou'. He enjoyed his first lessons in painting in Amsterdam. He then continued his studies at the Academy for Visual Arts in Paris, among others. His first monumental paintings' De Kevelaar ',' Kerkgang bij avond ', the' Nachtwacht van Edam 'and' St. Maartenfeest 'were discovered by the Dutch painter D.B. Nanninga, who introduced him to the art firm of Meijer W. Goudeket (1903-1943) in Amsterdam. The young artist then went on to paint for this internationally active firm. A specialty of Anthony Beek was interpreting the colors of old masters such as Rembrandt and Gerard Dou. Anthony Beek married the famous American watercolor artist Alice Dow Engley. The artist couple traversed their art ship 'Gerard Dou' at home and abroad. With great success they held here and there exhibitions, in which painters of reputation participated, including the famous Thérèse Schwartze (1851-1918), Lizzy Ansingh (1875-1959), Arthur Briët (1867-1939) and W.A. Cut (1883-1967).
